Bell launched the all-new MX-9 Adventure helmet to provide quality protection for dual sport and adventure touring riders at an attractive price. We wanted to give this helmet a real-world shakedown during a couple long days in the saddle. Equipped with a pair of KTM dual sport bikes, we toured the Newberry National Monument in Bend, Oregon and the surrounding areas. It was a true adventure ride as we navigated across town, paved highways, wide gravel roads, Jeep access and single-track. Through it all the Bell helmet was excellent. Both of our test riders found it comfortable through the duration of 10-hour riding days. The intermediate-oval design accepts a wide range of head shapes without creating pressure points. An updated cheek pad and liner system works well to reduce the squish on a rider’s cheeks and wicks moisture well. The vent system isn’t mind-blowing, but the adjustable mouth guard makes a noticeable difference at speed and the rest of the fixed vents do an adequate job.
Raising the face shield is simple, though there isn’t a tab to assist lowering, which forces the pilot to touch the front surface. This will eventually lead to scratching, though it wasn’t a concern for us in just a couple days. A quality gasket along the edge of the eyeport provides a good seal against dust, and we experienced the kind of invasive and abrasive dust that only can only come from volcanic soils – it’s terrible. The MX-9 Adventure handles it well. It’s possible to wear a set of goggles without needing to remove the shield. Goggles can be worn with the shield in the raised or lowered position, which gives the rider an extra option that we found very useful. Both of our test riders enjoyed the extra coverage that the visor provides against sun and debris. Since dual sporting isn’t a race, we typically try to stay back far enough to avoid roost, but the visor is a welcome addition when pushing through trailside brush. It does create unwanted lift at speeds above 65 mph on bikes like ours that offer no wind protection.
Overall this is a very solid helmet. The DOT rating and on/off-road blend is perfect for riders looking to connect trails or head out for week-long adventures. Styling is in the ballpark for most people and anyone with experience in the standard Bell MX-9 off-road helmet or Bell Moto-9 will especially appreciate the fit. A full retail price of 200 bucks is very fair, and it’s a helmet that could hold its own against more expensive options.
